About The Department

The Department is divided into 4 sections;

  1. Archeology, Heritage and Museum Studies,
  2. History,
  3. Economic History and
  4. Development Studies.

The Department offers taught Masters programmes in African History and Development Studies. These Masters programmes aim to prepare students for Doctoral studies. The Department also offers MPhil and DPhil Degrees in Archaeology, History, Economic History and Development Studies.

Programme competencies and skills:
Archaeology, Heritage and Museum Studies
  1. Archaeological FieldworkStudents in archaeology have practical experience in conducting fieldwork including excavations, surveys and mapping.
  1. Cultural Heritage DocumentationStudents are exposed to various documentation techniques in various contexts including museum documentation, collection documentation, site condition assessment and documentation and site mapping.
  1. Community Engagement SkillsStudents gain skills in communicating and engaging with various stakeholders such as local communities in the practice of heritage management
  1. Projects Management SkillsStudents are acquainted with project management skills that prepare them for managing projects at various levels.
  1. Application of technology to archaeology and cultural heritageStudents gain proficiency in the application of advanced technologies such as GIS in archaeological research and cultural heritage management.
  1. Entrepreneurship skills Students gain entrepreneurial skills for the culture sector
  1. Data Analysis Students are able to apply various applications in the analysis of archaeological and cultural heritage data.
  1. Adaptability Students from the programme are prepared for opportunities in a wide array of employment opportunities from research, practice, management among others. As such adaptability is a key competency that is emphasised in the programme.
  1. Communication Skills Students learn to effectively communicate with different audiences such as visiting publics at heritage places, museums, galleries or the wider communities in various outreach programmes. They are also conversant with report writing and presentations as part of communication.
  1. Cultural Ethics Students learn to respect diversity in cultures and are aware of the ethics involved in working in the cultural sector (archaeological sites, galleries, museums, communities, etc).
