ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Welcome to the Department of Ethics, Philosophy, Religion and Theology. The department is divided into 4 sections, namely, Ethics and Philosophy; Religious Studies and Theology; Family and Religious Studies as well as Health and Life Skills. The department offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the areas of Ethics and Philosophy as well as Religious Studies and Theology.

Learning Outcomes

In line with Education 5.0, which is a heritage-based approach to teaching and learning, our students, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, will be equipped to:

  • Demonstrate critical thinking and ability to ask relevant questions, examine different sides of issues, and recognize and evaluate ethical, philosophical and religious arguments,
  • Critique important historical and contemporary interpretive frameworks used in the disciplines of Ethics, Philosophy, Religious Studies and Theology.
  • Apply philosophical, ethical, religious studies analytic skills to important public interest issues and to solve different socio-political challenges using philosophical and religious approaches.
  • Attain the research skills necessary for writing a research project that engages with primary and, where applicable, secondary literature on a topic in philosophy, ethics or religious studies.
  • Provide thoughtful and empathetic leadership to different communities.
  • Provide consultancy and support services to communities in need.
  • Demonstrate an appreciation of the pervasive nature of philosophy and religion in all facets of human life by making interventions that address the many challenges of the world such as war, socio-political inequality, HIV/ AIDS, famine, environmental change among other issues.

The Department has experienced and seasoned lecturers/ researchers of high international standing as evidenced by the wide range of research expertise they have.

·        Board of Trustees member of a Cultural Organisation in Chipinge since 2013: Ndau Festival of the Arts (NdaFA) Trust.

·        Currently involved in a cultural dance (Mphongo) skills transfer action-research project for primary school pupils in Chipinge (2020-2022).

Working on producing magazine and short video/ film on Ndau traditional dance skills for community/ cultural tourism to improve rural livelihoods
